"The boy was Owen Martin. He was adopted at ten years old by Sam and Samantha Martin whose inability to have children was to remain a stubborn infection for them both, eventually ending their marriage. They argued incessantly prior to the adoption and even more vituperatively afterward. Samantha was appalled by the boy’s given name and was astonished that the social workers would not support changing it to Vincent, her father’s brother’s name. He was too old, they insisted, at ten years, to assimilate a name change. It could be damaging and could very well lead to a collapse of the bonding experience altogether. Samantha openly complained that Owen was a weakling’s name and that the boy would never outrun such a weakling’s name. Samantha abandoned her new family while the ink dried on the paperwork."
